Nebraska Quarterback Dylan Raiola Out for Season with Broken Fibula
LINCOLN, Neb. — Nebraska Cornhuskers quarterback Dylan Raiola will miss the remainder of the season due to a broken fibula, the school announced on Sunday. The injury occurred Saturday night during the Huskers’ game against USC when Raiola was sacked with 12:04 left in the third quarter.
Before the injury, Raiola had led Nebraska to a 14-6 lead over the Trojans. The game ended with a score of 21-17 in favor of USC, continuing Nebraska’s streak of 29 consecutive losses to AP Top 25 teams dating back to 2016.
Coach Matt Rhule confirmed that Raiola, a sophomore, was unable to return to the game after the injury. Despite wanting to play, Rhule prioritised Raiola’s health, stating, “I love you too much to ask you to play when you’re hurt like this.”
Raiola has been a crucial player for Nebraska this season, throwing for 2,000 yards with 18 touchdowns and six interceptions. He completed 72.4 percent of his passes over nine games. His absence will be felt significantly as he has started all of Nebraska’s games since his freshman year.
True freshman quarterback TJ Lateef took over for Raiola after the injury. Lateef completed 5 of 7 passes for 7 yards and added 18 rushing yards in the game against USC. He is expected to start in the upcoming game against UCLA next Saturday.
“We’re going to fight for our quarterback,” defensive end Williams Nwaneri said after the game. “That’s the mindset.”
Raiola expressed gratitude for support received from fans on social media, stating, “Thank you all for your thoughts and prayers. Just a small bump in the road to a beautiful journey back to playing the game that I love!”
