Nevada Power Outage Caused by Mylar Balloons Resolved

Reno, Nevada — Power has been restored to more than 10,000 customers in Nevada following a significant outage caused by mylar balloons entangled in power lines over the weekend.
On Sunday, some mylar balloons floated away and ended up snagged in equipment at a local substation, disrupting service to thousands of residents. Nevada Energy crews worked diligently to clear the debris and restore electricity to those affected.
In light of the incident, Nevada Energy issued a public reminder about the hazards associated with mylar balloons. The utility company cautioned that the metallic lining of these balloons can interfere with power lines, leading to equipment failures. “We urge customers to tether balloons if used outdoors, and to puncture them when they’re no longer needed,” said a Nevada Energy spokesperson.
If a balloon does become stuck in a power line, residents are encouraged to contact the utility for assistance rather than attempting to remove it themselves.
This incident underscores ongoing concerns regarding power safety and the potential dangers posed by seemingly innocuous items like balloons. Utility providers are consistently adapting their safety protocols to mitigate risks as they arise.
