Newcastle Pursues Premier League Glory Amid Injuries and Challenges

NEWCASTLE, England — Newcastle United is making history this season as they strive for Premier League success under manager Eddie Howe. As of May 2, 2025, the team stands third in the league and is in contention for a Champions League spot. This follows Newcastle’s recent triumph in the Carabao Cup, marking their first domestic trophy in 70 years.
Newcastle has shown remarkable form, winning 20 of their last 26 matches across all competitions, a record for the club in a single Premier League season. Their achievement is even more significant considering the challenges they faced earlier in the season, including injuries and a crowded fixture schedule.
“We have so much to do to get to the top,” Howe told reporters. “It’s not going to happen just by thinking it. We have to actually deliver it.”
While Newcastle’s winning streak is impressive, there are concerns to consider. Unlike league leaders Liverpool, who have lost only twice this season, Newcastle has not drawn any games since a 3-3 stalemate with Liverpool in December 2024. Instead, when Newcastle loses, they often do so decisively, with several heavy defeats this season against teams like Bournemouth and Manchester City.
In the league, Newcastle has secured 14 wins from their last 19 matches, giving them a win percentage of 73.7. Their overall performance puts them on par with Liverpool, who leads the table with a win percentage slightly lower at 73.5.
Despite the positives, injuries are a significant challenge for Newcastle. Forward Joelinton is unlikely to play again this season due to a knee injury, which has troubled him previously. Howe confirmed Joelinton will miss the upcoming match against Brighton & Hove Albion and emphasized the need for him to rest.
Sven Botman returned from his own injury and is expected to feature in the final matches, providing a boost to the squad. Meanwhile, club captain Jamaal Lascelles has yet to play this season but is showing progress in his recovery.
“He’s making good progress,” Howe said of Lascelles. “Possibly for Jamaal, it may be better for next season, but he’s done all the work.”
Looking ahead, Newcastle’s ambition for silverware remains strong, but transitional hurdles, including squad depth and upcoming transfers, could shape their future. The team hopes to build on their current momentum and achieve further success in coming seasons.
As Newcastle continues their quest for Premier League glory, their fans remain hopeful, reflecting on a season that may define a new era for the club.
