Newfoundland And Labrador Cod Fishery

In a landmark decision, the commercial northern cod fishery in Newfoundland and Labrador has been reinstated after a 32-year moratorium. This move, although welcomed, comes with a quota that is lower than what many had anticipated. The cautious approach to the fishery is aimed at ensuring the sustainability of the cod population.

Meanwhile, the province is dealing with ongoing wildfires in the Labrador region. All personnel have been evacuated from Churchill Falls, and an update on the situation is expected later in the day. The fire situation in Churchill Falls continues to be a concern, with power recently restored to Wabush but the fire situation remaining volatile.

Public safety has also been a pressing issue, particularly in Happy Valley-Goose Bay. Residents recently voiced their concerns at a town meeting, addressing a report released by a provincial working group in October. The meeting highlighted the need for improved public safety measures in the area.

In other news, a serious motor vehicle incident occurred in Outer Cove on Wednesday night, prompting a response from first responders, including St. John’s Regional firefighters and the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC). The incident happened just after 7:30 p.m. on Lower Road.

The province is also grappling with healthcare challenges, including a shortage of family physicians. A family doctor in Corner Brook has announced her decision to quit and close her practice due to burnout and the lack of effective government retention efforts.

Additionally, Newfoundland and Labrador has launched a lawsuit against the federal government over the equalization program, marking another significant development in the province’s relations with the federal authorities.
