Novak Djokovic Shanghai Masters 2024

Novak Djokovic, the world number four, displayed frustration during his opening match against Alex Michelsen at the Shanghai Masters after receiving a time violation warning. The incident occurred early in the second set when the 24-time Grand Slam champion exceeded the shot clock, prompting a warning from chair umpire Mohamed Lahyani.

The Serbian tennis star vocally questioned Lahyani, asking, “Why do you do this man? Why do you do this man?” In response, Lahyani reminded Djokovic that the timing system is now automated, underscoring that the start of the countdown is beyond the umpire’s control with the current setup.

The Shanghai Masters has adopted a new automated shot clock system, which begins three seconds after the end of the previous point, allowing players 25 seconds to serve. Unlike previous systems where umpires could exercise some discretion, the new timing mechanism offers no such flexibility, a point highlighted by commentator Nick Lester. Lester inferred that Lahyani was somewhat reluctant in delivering the warning, stating, “It was almost like he didn’t want to do it. He said it with a whisper.” Co-commentator Arvind Palmer supported the enforcement of rules, asserting that consistency in rule application is necessary.

Despite the warning, Djokovic continued his performance unperturbed, managing to hold his serve. This episode is not isolated, as other players, including the Spaniard who took issue with the clock during a trial at Queen's Club in June, have also struggled to adapt to the automated system.

Besides the match events, Djokovic and fellow player Alcaraz shared a cordial moment behind the scenes at the tournament. This occurrence marked their first interaction since their respective unexpected exits at the US Open. Djokovic, who is selective about his competitions, expressed contentment with his limited participation in the tour, emphasizing his focus on national representation and Grand Slam events over rankings and qualifications for tournaments like the ATP Finals.
