Novak Djokovic Withdraws From ATP Finals Due to Injury Again
ATHENS, Greece — Novak Djokovic announced his withdrawal from the ATP Finals for the second consecutive year on Saturday after winning the Hellenic Championship. The 38-year-old Serbian cited a recurring shoulder injury as the reason for his decision.
After defeating Italian Lorenzo Musetti in a thrilling final that lasted nearly three hours, Djokovic expressed his disappointment on social media. “I was really looking forward to competing in Turin and giving my best,” he wrote.
Djokovic’s victory in Athens marked his 101st career title, yet his win was overshadowed by health concerns. He revealed he had been managing the shoulder injury throughout the tournament, leading to concerns about his ability to compete at the ATP Finals, which begins Sunday in Turin, Italy.
“After yesterday’s match, I was hoping it would not flare up,” Djokovic said. “But even before today’s final, it was not great. I had to take strong medications to play.”
As a result of his withdrawal, Musetti, who lost in the final, will take Djokovic’s place in the tournament. The withdrawal marks an ongoing struggle for Djokovic, who also missed last year’s ATP Finals due to injury.
Djokovic said he felt it was necessary to prioritize his health. “I felt there’s no chance for me to go through the entire tournament in Turin with the required level of tennis,” he explained.
Now the world looks to see how Musetti will perform in the ATP Finals, stepping into the competition as an unexpected participant.
