Luther H. Peacock, a revered master shipbuilder and dedicated family man, passed away on Wednesday, September 25, 2024, in Kenly, North Carolina, at the age of 84. His passing occurred just two days before what would have been his 85th birthday. Born in Wilson County to Alvin and Lela Peacock, Luther spent his childhood in Kenly, attending local schools Buckhorn Elementary and Rock Ridge High School.

Career and Military Service

At the age of 18, Peacock migrated to Newport News, Virginia, where he embarked on a notable 63-year career at the Newport News Shipyard and Dry Dock Company. Peacock was a graduate of the esteemed Apprentice School. Following his graduation, he served two years in the United States Army. After his military service, he returned to the shipyard, making significant contributions to the development of submarine and aircraft carrier programs.

Luther Peacock’s expertise was notably recognized in his work with the Los Angeles-class attack submarines—a pivotal advancement in naval technology. His career also saw him involved in the design and overhaul development of multiple aircraft carriers. Across his illustrious career, Peacock participated in the design and construction of 53 naval vessels, showcasing his depth of knowledge and dedication. Acknowledging his contributions, he was honored with the title of Master Shipbuilder.

Family and Faith

Peacock is survived by his wife of nearly 63 years, Marietha (Godwin), and his children, William Peacock of Newport News, Virginia, along with Robert and his wife, Linda Peacock, of Selma, North Carolina. He also leaves behind a grandson, Luke Peacock of Gloucester, Virginia. Luther was predeceased by his parents and his siblings, Billy Ray Peacock and Janice Brown. His faith was an essential aspect of his life; at 29, he embraced Christianity and became a member of the International Pentecostal Holiness Church—an organization tracing its origins to the Azusa Street Revival of 1906 in Los Angeles, California.

Passions and Legacy

A sports aficionado, Luther was active in baseball and football during his time at the Apprentice School and participated in the Newport News Shipbuilding baseball and golf leagues. As a sports fan, he ardently supported the Boston Red Sox, Boston Celtics, Baltimore Colts, and the University of North Carolina. Golf was another passion, especially when enjoyed with family and friends, alongside participating in the Apprentice School Alumni golf tournament.

Luther Peacock leaves a legacy defined by his unwavering faith, work ethic, and an affectionate nature. Colleagues and family members fondly remember his fun-loving demeanor and staunch support for those around him.

Final Arrangements

A graveside service honoring Luther H. Peacock will take place on September 30 at 11:00 a.m. at the Godwin Family Cemetery located at 537 Jerusalem Church Road in Kenly, North Carolina. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to the scholarship fund for the Newport News Apprentice School Foundation in his honor.
