Ohio State Football Game Highlights

COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Ohio State Buckeyes continued their winning streak on Saturday, securing a 34-16 victory over then-No. 17 Illinois. This win marked their sixth consecutive triumph, reinforcing their strong season thus far.

Notably, the Buckeyes allowed their first red zone touchdowns of the season against Illinois, raising concerns about their defense’s performance despite their overall brilliance this year.

Head coach Ryan Day expressed a desire for perfection, indicating that the team must address certain issues as they prepare for a matchup against Wisconsin next Saturday. The Buckeyes’ run game, which averages 160 yards per game, has been lackluster, ranking towards the middle of the Big Ten.

Day noted that although the offensive line performed well, the running backs struggled, particularly due to the injury of key player Dallan Hayden. Even with this setback, Day believes in the offensive line’s potential and the abilities of the running backs.

In the game against Illinois, Ohio State rushed for only 106 yards, well below their average, leading to questions about the run game’s reliability this season. Despite these challenges, Ohio State’s defense remains a strong point, allowing just 41 points in six games, the lowest in the FBS this year.

The Buckeyes’ defense also forced three turnovers and limited Illinois’ passing game significantly. Day praised the defensive unit, asserting they are playing at a level comparable to some of the best in college football.

With 295 total yards allowed against Illinois, the Buckeyes are still well-positioned for a deep playoff run if they can sharpen their offensive strategies in upcoming games against tougher opponents.
