COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State running back James Peoples remains focused on contributing to his team’s success this season, despite a shift in his playing time and role. After high expectations entering the 2025 season, Peoples has found himself as the No. 4 running back in the Buckeyes’ depth chart.

Peoples was projected to make a significant impact after impressive performances in his limited action as the No. 3 RB behind TreVeyon Henderson and Quinshon Judkins last season. However, a disappointing season opener against Texas, where he rushed for only 20 yards on ten carries, allowed freshman Bo Jackson to quickly surpass him.

Peoples acknowledged this change in the lineup has been challenging, but he maintains a positive outlook. On Wednesday, he said, “It’s definitely been an adjustment. But it’s good to see the team flourishing and the offense getting some pace.”

Despite playing fewer snaps than in previous seasons, Peoples has seen more participation than last year when Henderson and Judkins dominated the carries. The Buckeyes are now utilizing a four-man running back rotation. Peoples has logged 17 carries for 52 yards in the last four games, underscoring the competition within the depth chart.

Even with Jackson and fellow freshman Isaiah West emerging as the leading rushers, Peoples continues to add value to the team, averaging 4.75 yards per carry. He believes he can contribute significantly in various aspects of the game, stating, “I love running between the tackles, catching the ball… It’s a strength.”

Peoples has been utilized in the passing game this season, with over half of his snaps coming on passing plays. He has caught four passes in the last three games, showcasing his versatility as a former wide receiver.

While he has not yet broken any explosive runs this season, he remains eager to make impactful plays, understanding that patience is essential. “Every time you want to be like, ‘Man, I gotta strike,’ but having your mind like that can really throw you off your game,” Peoples explained.

The Buckeyes’ running game has been less effective than expected this season, prompting the coaches to rely more on freshmen like Jackson and West. Nevertheless, Peoples trusts in his own development and continues working hard as the team approaches critical games. “This game comes with a lot of ups and downs… just seeing my growth as a player,” he said.

Peoples recognizes the importance of the coming games and is determined to improve, stating, “We got a lot of football left… If I keep on doing what I’m doing, it’s gonna happen.” His commitment to the team spirit remains strong, embodying the mindset of a dedicated player striving for excellence.
