Edmonton Oilers Connor Mcdavid Philadelphia Flyers Game

PHILADELPHIA, PA – The Edmonton Oilers begin a crucial five-game road trip on Saturday, facing the Philadelphia Flyers immediately following the 4 Nations Face-Off break. Led by Captain Connor McDavid, who scored the tournament-winning goal for Canada, the Oilers aim to capitalize on their recent success for their upcoming stretch of games.

During Thursday’s 4 Nations Face-Off final, McDavid pushed Canada to a thrilling 3-2 overtime victory over the United States. His top-shelf goal at 11:42 in overtime not only secured the title but also set the stage for an enthusiastic reception when he reunites with the Oilers in Philadelphia.

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, McDavid’s regular linemate, expressed excitement over his teammate’s achievement. “It was awesome,” Nugent-Hopkins said. “We were watching together, obviously pretty nervous, but you’re cheering for Canada and of course you’re cheering for Connor.” He added, “You don’t really doubt that he’s going to do something like that, so just always fun to see him have a performance like that.”

Head Coach Kris Knoblauch shared Nugent-Hopkins’ enthusiasm, reflecting on their collective experience watching McDavid’s momentous goal. “The staff and I were at the hotel watching the game and obviously, we were very invested,” Knoblauch said. “We were very excited that Connor scored the goal. A lot of excitement to see him score.”

Although McDavid did not participate in Friday’s practice at Flyers Training Center, he arrived in Philadelphia to prepare for the encounter. Knoblauch highlighted McDavid’s relentless dedication to the team. “Connor never wants to take any time off. He always wants to play. He always wants to be with his team,” he said.

Along with McDavid’s return, the Oilers will debut forward Matt Savoie, who is set to play alongside Leon Draisaitl and Vasily Podkolzin. At just 21, Savoie is an offensively skilled player who impressed during his time in the AHL, notching 37 points in 45 games with the Bakersfield Condors.

Nugent-Hopkins stated, “It’s good to have some young energy, but he’s a great kid. Really good hockey player. Sees the ice so well.”

The Oilers are expected to start Stuart Skinner in goal, who has a 3-0-1 record against the Flyers with a 1.96 goals-against average. Edmonton is currently tied with Vegas for the top spot in the Western Conference, garnering 72 points so far in the season.

Philadelphia, currently sitting last in the Metropolitan Division, looks to turn their fortunes around after a brief respite with a 3-2 win before the break. The Flyers hold a 13-13-1 record at home this season.

This matchup marks the conclusion of the season series between these two teams, with the Oilers previously emerging victorious in a 4-3 overtime win on October 15. The stage is set for an exciting contest as Edmonton hopes McDavid’s international success ignites their quest for a Stanley Cup.
