Oklahoma Quarterback Mateer Sec Game

NORMAN, Okla. — Oklahoma quarterback Nick Mateer has been upgraded to probable for Saturday’s highly anticipated matchup against Texas, according to the SEC availability report. This update comes just 17 days after Mateer underwent surgery for a broken bone in his throwing hand.

Sources told ESPN that Mateer has been practicing and progressing well enough to position himself for a potential return. Despite this positive sign, the final decision on his availability will likely not be made until just before kickoff, as his pain level and ability to grip the football remain under close observation.

If he does play, it would align perfectly with the most optimistic timelines regarding his recovery. Oklahoma head coach Brent Venables initially expressed doubt about Mateer’s availability, listing him as questionable earlier this week.

Mateer established himself as a Heisman Trophy contender during the first month of the season, but he sustained his injury during the first quarter of a 24-17 victory over Auburn on September 20. Despite his injury, he remained in the game, finishing with 271 passing yards.

Since his surgery on September 24, Mateer has missed only one game due to a bye and a resounding 44-0 victory over Kent State. Backup quarterback Jake Hawkins started in the Kent game, delivering an impressive performance with three touchdown passes.

Oklahoma currently holds a 5-0 record, while Texas enters the game at 3-2. The Longhorns dropped out of the AP Top 25 following a 29-21 loss on the road.

“We’re preparing as if Mateer will play,” Texas coach Steve Sarkisian stated. “He’s a dynamic player and the engine of their offense.”
