Pakistan Wins Thrilling First ODI Against South Africa
FAISALABAD, Pakistan — Pakistan defeated South Africa by two wickets in a gripping first ODI on Tuesday at Iqbal Cricket Stadium.
Chasing a target of 264, Pakistan reached 265 for 8 with just two balls remaining. The match was a nail-biter, showcasing strong performances from both teams.
Pakistan started well, with openers Saim Ayub and Fakhar Zaman putting together an 87-run stand. Ayub scored 39 runs off 42 balls, while Zaman contributed 45 runs from 57 balls before being dismissed by Donovan Ferreira, who ignited a South African comeback.
After the fall of the openers, Pakistan’s captain Babar Azam fell cheaply for just seven runs, leaving the team at 105 for 3.
However, Mohammad Rizwan and Salman Ali Agha steadied the innings with a crucial 91-run partnership for the fourth wicket, bringing Pakistan back into contention. Rizwan scored 55 runs, while Agha led with 62 runs, helping their team secure the vital runs required.
Pakistan’s bowlers did well initially, as they held South Africa to a total of 263 runs. Quinton de Kock top-scored for the visiting team with 63 runs, supported by Lhuan-dre Pretorius, who made 57 runs. Matthew Breetzke added 42 runs, but the team collapsed from a promising position, losing their last six wickets for just 122 runs.
Pakistani bowlers Naseem Shah and Abrar Ahmed each took three wickets, limiting the South African innings effectively. The match was notable for a significant debut, with Breetzke leading a second-string South Africa squad in the absence of several key players.
After the match, Agha was named Player of the Match for his crucial contributions. He expressed hope that the team would continue their good form into the next games.
The win provides Pakistan a 1-0 lead in the three-match series, setting the stage for a fierce competition as the teams prepare for the second ODI on November 6.
