PDP Chieftain Accuses Late Access Bank CEO of Corruption in Nigerian Banking Industry
Chief Bode George, a prominent member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has stirred controversy by accusing the late CEO of Access Bank, Herbert Wigwe, of involvement in corruption within the Nigerian banking industry.
George made these startling allegations just hours prior to the tragic news of Wigwe’s untimely death, along with his wife and son, in a helicopter crash while en route to watch the Super Bowl in Las Vegas.
The PDP chieftain implicated not only Wigwe but also other notable figures in the banking sector, including Tony Elumelu of UBA and former CBN governor Godwin Emefiele, alleging that they had accumulated significant wealth through corrupt practices.
According to George, these bank CEOs received monthly allocations of dollars, which they purportedly diverted for personal gain instead of using them for legitimate banking operations.
He claimed that Wigwe and his counterparts engaged in selling these dollars to entities like Aboki, Bureau de Change (BDC), and the black market, raking in billions of Naira in profits while depriving the public of much-needed access to foreign currency.
George emphasized that despite being entrusted with these funds meant to support the financial system, the bank executives exploited their positions for personal enrichment, casting a shadow over the integrity of the Nigerian banking industry.
