Phoenix Mercury Waive McConnell, Sign Williams Amid Player Injuries

PHOENIX, AZ — The Phoenix Mercury announced on May 11, 2025, that they have waived guard Megan McConnell and signed Kiana Williams as a corresponding roster move. The decision comes after McConnell suffered a tibial plateau fracture in her right knee during a game against the Minnesota Lynx on May 30.
McConnell’s injury was serious, and she will continue to receive rehabilitation support from the team. The Mercury expressed their gratitude for her contributions while she recovers. In the press release, team officials emphasized their commitment to McConnell’s health and recovery.
Kiana Williams joins the Mercury after spending the past three seasons in the WNBA. She played 27 games throughout her career, including 13 games with the Seattle Storm in 2024. The team welcomed her with excitement on social media, stating, ‘Welcome to Phoenix, Kiana! 🌵’
In another recent development, guard Lexi Held was diagnosed with a pneumothorax— a partially collapsed lung—following an injury sustained during a game against the New York Liberty on June 19. The Mercury stated that Held is making progress in her recovery, but they have not set a timeline for her return.
After the incident, Held remained under observation but was cleared for travel. However, she was not permitted to fly and had to take a three-plus day train trip home with Physical Therapist Ashley Lea. The team continues to monitor her health closely.
