Phoenix Suns to Play Preseason Game at Michigan State University
East Lansing, Mich. – Michigan State University’s esteemed head basketball coach, Tom Izzo, revealed to reporters the origins of an unprecedented NBA preseason game, set to take place at the Breslin Center. The game features the Phoenix Suns facing off against the Detroit Pistons. The catalyst behind this event is none other than Mat Ishbia, former Michigan State walk-on player and now successful businessman, who initiated the idea.
Speaking about Ishbia’s enthusiasm, Izzo reminisced, “He asked me about it and said, ‘Oh man, that’d be awesome,’” adding that Ishbia’s energetic approach, often peppered with 4:30 a.m. texts, came as no surprise. “That’s just him. He doesn’t sleep,” Izzo noted, praising Ishbia’s dedication and drive, traits that were also evident during his college years from 1999 to 2002.
Ishbia, who acquired the Phoenix Suns and the WNBA’s Mercury in February 2023 for a record $4 billion, will see his team take on the Pistons, alongside Pistons owner and fellow Michigan State alumnus, Tom Gores. The game promises to unify the Spartan community, marking a special occasion for Ishbia. It underscores his longstanding relationship with the university, having previously pledged a record $32 million donation to Michigan State’s athletics.
“Without being sappy, it means the world,” expressed Izzo about the game, highlighting Ishbia’s contributions and impact. Besides his philanthropic endeavors, Ishbia is also CEO and Chairman of Michigan-based United Wholesale Mortgage.
Kevin Durant, an NBA superstar with the Suns, expressed excitement about the matchup, noting the unique opportunity for local fans to witness NBA talent up-close. “I’m looking forward to seeing what it’s like,” Durant remarked, acknowledging that he has yet to visit East Lansing or Michigan State.
Apart from the crossover of collegiate ties, the game brings another narrative for Suns’ star Devin Booker. Born in Grand Rapids, only 45 minutes from East Lansing, Booker reflected on his connection to the area and his initial aspirations of playing for Michigan State. “It was a dream of mine,” Booker shared, emphasizing the local ties and significance this game holds for him personally.
Booker’s sentiment is echoed by Izzo, who reminisced on past recruiting efforts involving Booker. Despite choosing to play at Kentucky, Booker’s affinity for Michigan State remains, highlighted by his choice to sport customized footwear bearing the Spartans mascot for the game.
Adding to the celebratory tone, around 3,000 tickets have been distributed to UWM employees, affirming Ishbia’s intent to engage as many as possible in this ground-breaking event. This camaraderie recalls last year’s preseason game where the Suns convened at UWM’s extensive Pontiac campus.
Considering the expansive vision Ishbia has for the Suns, the upcoming NBA season appears promising. Former coach Izzo firmly believes in Ishbia’s championship prospects, stating, “He’s not afraid to spend his money to win a championship.” The Suns, noted as the NBA’s first $400-million team due to their extensive payroll, exhibit Ishbia’s determination to clinch success.
As the Suns prepare for a season start against the Los Angeles Clippers on October 23, all eyes will be on East Lansing as Ishbia returns to the court where his basketball journey began, merging his history with his current aspirations in the world of professional sports.
