DETROIT, MI – The deadline for rookie-scale contract extensions passed without agreements for Jaden Ivey and Jalen Duren of the Detroit Pistons, leaving both players to enter restricted free agency this offseason. The deadline came and went on October 20, 2025, at 6 p.m. ET as the team was unable to reach deals before the cutoff.

Coach J.B. Bickerstaff spoke on how he communicated with the players leading up to the deadline. “Directly — you have to,” he said, stressing the emotional challenges of basketball’s business side. He expressed the importance of supporting players during this time and helping them secure the best possible outcomes.

Ivey, 23, had shown promising statistics last season, averaging 17.6 points, but his year was cut short due to a fibula fracture. Currently, he is expected to miss at least the first month of the regular season due to arthroscopic surgery on his right knee.

Pistons president of basketball operations Trajan Langdon now has the rest of the season to evaluate Ivey’s performance upon his return and determine if he fits into the franchise’s long-term plans. Ivey indicated during media day that he was more focused on playing again than on contract negotiations.

Meanwhile, 21-year-old Duren also faced his share of ups and downs last season. He averaged 11.8 points and transitioned to a starting role, showing growth throughout the year. Despite averaging fewer points than the previous season, his field goal percentage and the number of games played were his best yet. Duren is hoping to showcase his skills starting in the upcoming game against the Chicago Bulls.

Duren expressed his commitment to Detroit, saying, “The hope is to spend my whole career in Detroit. It’s always been love.” His off-season training with teammate Cade Cunningham in Rome appeared to strengthen their on-court connection.

Langdon remarked that both players have important roles this season, and their contributions will be crucial for the Pistons. As they head into a pivotal year, the decisions regarding Ivey and Duren will impact the team’s future direction.
