Polestar, the electric vehicle manufacturer and former performance division of Volvo, is set to broaden its retail presence in Australia. This move marks a shift towards a more traditional ‘retail-centric’ approach, which will supplement its existing distribution network over the ensuing months and years. The new strategy will enable customers to purchase vehicles in physical locations rather than exclusively online. However, the company will maintain its ‘agency’ sales model, which enforces fixed pricing and eliminates negotiation.

Scott Maynard, the head of Polestar in Australia, elaborated on these developments during the launch of Polestar’s new large SUV. He highlighted that the transition from factory-owned spaces, which primarily served to introduce the brand, to active selling environments is crucial for the electric-only brand. Maynard stated, “We are transitioning out of factory-owned space that really provides little more than an experience of the brand, to a more active selling model.” He added that this transition allows the brand to be replicated in more locations, increasing accessibility.

Australians can anticipate the establishment of Polestar dealerships in every capital city, with plans to expand into major regional centers subsequently. Some outlets will be collaborations with existing dealerships, while others will be standalone facilities. This expansion is considered significant for Polestar, which has undergone numerous leadership changes, including the appointment of Michael Lohscheller as the global CEO and Philipp Roemers as the chief designer.

In parallel developments in Ireland, Polestar is introducing an updated version of its Polestar 2 electric car, referred to as the ‘2025 model year.’ The adjusted design features a smartzone in the front, replacing the grille-like structure, and aligns with the aesthetic of the Polestar 3. This area includes components such as forward-facing radar and a front parking camera, with heated elements to prevent freezing.

The updated Polestar 2 sees a shift from front-wheel to rear-wheel drive, sharing its platform with Volvo’s EX40 and EC40 models. This transition enhances power and extends range, attributed to advances in batteries and electric motors. The entry-level Standard Range Single Motor version now encompasses a 67kWh battery, achieving a 554 km range on the WLTP test cycle with a price starting from €53,195. The vehicle offers 272hp and 0-100 km/h acceleration in 6.2 seconds.

An alternative Long Range Single Motor version is available, boasting a 75kWh battery for a range of 659km. This variant features increased power of 300hp and accelerates from 0-100 km/h in 5.9 seconds, priced from €55,195. Features include 19-inch alloy wheels, adaptive cruise control, and a panoramic glass roof.

In addition, Polestar plans to offer four-wheel-drive, two-motor models of the Polestar 2, delivering up to 475hp and 740Nm of torque, with prices to be announced soon.
