Police Standoff Resolved in Penbrooke Meadows, Residents Allowed to Return Home
After more than 24 hours, Calgary police have declared the armed standoff in Penbrooke Meadows as no longer a threat to public safety. The incident, which began with shots fired at officers executing a search warrant, has been brought under control.
Residents of specific addresses on Penswood Way S.E. and Malvern Close N.E. were unable to return home, while others were allowed back with a police escort. The Village Square Leisure Centre and the Calgary Emergency Management Agency have been supporting those impacted by the situation.
Supt. Joe Brar from the Calgary Police Service’s operational support division stated that the risk level remained high as the suspect had been actively shooting at police. Details of the resolution of the standoff are still limited as the situation remains volatile.
Memorial Drive, a major Calgary thoroughfare, had been shut down between 52nd Street S.E. and 68th Street S.E. due to the incident. The Alberta RCMP assisted city police throughout the operation.
Police Chief Mark Neufeld provided updates via social media, mentioning the ongoing nature of the incident and the collaboration between Calgary Police and the RCMP. Residents who had been displaced were urged to seek alternative accommodations and call for assistance.
