Protestors Disrupt Final Round of Travelers Championship with Climate Change Message
During the final round of the PGA‘s Travelers Championship in Cromwell, Connecticut, climate change protestors caused a disruption as they ran onto the 18th green, delaying play for several minutes and spreading a powdery substance on the putting surface.
The protestors, numbering five in total, were seen wearing shirts with the message ‘No golf on a dead planet’ as captured by broadcaster CBS.
Despite the interruption, police swiftly removed the protestors, allowing players Tom Kim and Scottie Scheffler to finish the hole in a tie, leading to a playoff.
Scheffler eventually emerged as the winner of the championship after the playoff.
Post-match, Scheffler highlighted the chaotic moment, expressing gratitude towards the police for their swift action and removal of the protesters.
Kim shared his experience, mentioning how the incident momentarily distracted him from the game as he was concerned about safety.
Video footage from the scene showed officers wrestling with the protestors, while fans in the crowd voiced their disapproval through boos and obscenities.
Following the incident, a PGA Tour senior spokesperson, Joel Schuchmann, confirmed that the protestors were promptly arrested without causing any damage to the 18th green.
