Race of Champions Heads to Australia for the First Time
The Race of Champions, a prominent motorsport event featuring leading drivers from across the globe, is set to take place at Sydney’s Accor Stadium in early March 2025. This marks the first time the event will be held in the Southern Hemisphere.
Organisers have confirmed that a 950-meter circuit will be constructed within the Homebush venue, enabling spectators to view the entire competition from their seats. The event will unfold over two nights, with the ROC Nations Cup scheduled for March 7, followed by the individual competition on March 8.
Race of Champions, renowned for bringing together legends from Formula 1, IndyCar, Le Mans, World Rally, and Rally X, has previously been showcased at prestigious venues such as Paris’ Stade de France, London’s Wembley Stadium, and Beijing’s Bird’s Nest Olympic Stadium. Notable past participants include Michael Schumacher, Sebastian Vettel, and Daniel Ricciardo.
Fredrik Johnsson, President and Co-Founder of the Race of Champions, expressed excitement about the event’s Australian debut, stating, “Australia has a rich motorsport heritage, and we’re looking forward to celebrating that by pitting some of the best Australian drivers against some of the world’s most legendary racing stars in a spectacular showdown in the middle of Accor Stadium.”
The home team will be led by Jamie Whincup, a seven-time Supercars champion. Whincup described the opportunity as having “a special significance” since the event will be hosted in his homeland.
Another Australian veteran, Mick Doohan, welcomed the event, noting, “ROC’s concept with drivers from different forms of motorsport competing head-to-head inside a stadium creates a fantastic atmosphere both for the drivers and fans.”
The event is strategically scheduled a week before the Australian Grand Prix, presenting an opportunity for Formula 1 drivers to participate. Tickets for the Race of Champions will go on sale starting October 16.
