Raiders Gear Up for NFL Draft with Bold Strategies and New Faces

LAS VEGAS — The Las Vegas Raiders are at a turning point as they hold the No. 6 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. Coming off one of the NFL’s least productive run games last season, the team is poised to make significant changes aimed at improving their competitive edge.

In the latest episode of the Las Vegas Raiders Insider podcast, host Hondo Carpenter unveiled his Mock Draft 4.0, identifying a critical first-round pick for the Raiders. Carpenter discussed how recent acquisitions and draft strategies are designed to reinvigorate the Raiders’ offense, transitioning from a lackluster season to one filled with potential excitement.

Among the new additions is quarterback Geno Smith and rising star tight end Brock Bowers, both anticipated to enhance the team’s passing game. The Raiders have also secured former Miami Dolphins running back Raheem Mostert, who aims to bounce back after a strong performance last year.

Despite the enthusiasm surrounding these signings, questions remain regarding the team’s draft strategy. Mike Band, a notable expert from Next Gen Stats Research & Analytic, suggests that the Raiders are leaning towards selecting running back Ashton Jeanty. Jeanty’s impressive college season included 2,601 rushing yards and 29 touchdowns, showcasing his capability at the collegiate level.

Band pointed out that although some analytically-driven organizations might hesitate to choose a running back with a top pick, Jeanty’s explosive play-making ability makes him a strong candidate for the Raiders. “If head coach Pete Carroll and offensive coordinator Chip Kelly want to make the ground game their offensive identity, Jeanty could be their guy,” Band stated.

Meanwhile, special teams also remain a focal point in the Raiders’ game plan. Defensive back Johnson Jr. shared insights about the pivotal role of special teams, highlighting its potential to energize the team. “Playing special teams can be an energy spark for any team. If I go out there the first play and get a big hit—like I call it a boom hit—the crowd’s reaction can shift the game’s momentum,” he explained.

Johnson Jr. emphasized the importance of teamwork and high energy among players on the field. He noted that when energy levels rise, all players, including those on the offense, are motivated to elevate their performance. “It encourages everyone on the field to elevate their performance,” he added.

The prospect of learning from head coach Pete Carroll, known for mentoring skilled defensive backs such as Kam Chancellor and Richard Sherman, excites Johnson Jr. “The call I got from Pete [Carroll] was amazing. He’s known for working with bigger DBs, so we’re eager to see what he can do to help us improve,” he expressed.
