Rangers’ Rempe Injured After Heavyweight Fight Against Sharks’ Reaves
NEW YORK (AP) — The New York Rangers faced off against the San Jose Sharks at Madison Square Garden on Thursday night, highlighted by a fierce bout between heavyweights Matt Rempe and Ryan Reaves.
Less than six minutes into the game, Rempe, standing at 6-foot-9, challenged Reaves, a former Ranger, who had just delivered a hit to Juuso Parssinen. The challenge led to a fight that captivated the crowd, as the two players squared off at center ice.
The exchange of fists began with Reaves appearing to throw the first significant punch. Both players, well-known for their fighting abilities, traded blows while the audience cheered them on. Reaves had his helmet knocked off before Rempe managed to pull Reaves’ jersey over his head and landed some punches in return.
Referees intervened to separate the fighters after about a minute of battling. The crowd erupted in applause, and Kenny Albert, the announcer for ESPN, aptly described the moment as “The main event at Madison Square Garden.”
Unfortunately for the Rangers, Rempe did not return for the second period due to an upper-body injury. The team confirmed his status shortly after the bout. He had come into the game registered with one goal and two penalty minutes over his previous eight matches this season.
Rempe, drafted by New York in 2020, has gathered a total of 11 points and an impressive 138 penalty minutes during his two-plus years in the NHL. Despite his injury, his presence on the ice has been significant for the Rangers, seen as an important enforcer.
After leaving the ice, fans chanted his name in support, reflecting his popularity among the team’s followers. The tough match not only showcased the physicality of the sport but also highlighted the duel between two of the league’s renowned tough guys.
