Rare East Coast Earthquake Prompts Spiritual Reflection Among New Yorkers
A rare 4.8 magnitude earthquake shook New York City and the East Coast on Friday morning, leaving residents and officials astonished. The unexpected tremor triggered a spiritual reflection among many New Yorkers, prompting some to turn to traditional blessings for comfort and connection.
Despite the seismic event, no injuries were reported in New York City schools, with authorities confirming that school buildings remained intact. The Education Department reassured families that students were safe, encouraging schools to continue operations as usual.
David Banks, Chancellor of the Education Department, was present at Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts when the earthquake occurred. He urged calmness and normalcy, emphasizing that parents did not need to pick up their children early.
Kiri Soares, principal of the Urban Assembly Institute of Math and Science for Young Women in Brooklyn, expressed the stress and chaos caused by the earthquake and a pre-existing pipe issue. Meanwhile, Anna Nelson, an assistant principal at Bronx Latin, described the earthquake experience in a ninth-grade algebra class, highlighting the swift response of students and staff.
The earthquake’s epicenter was located just north of Whitehouse Station, New Jersey, causing tremors to be felt as far as Philadelphia. Despite the widespread impact, no significant damage was reported in the affected regions, including Colorado, as confirmed by the Colorado State Board of Education.
