BALTIMORE, Md. — The Baltimore Ravens have bolstered their special teams unit by signing veteran linebacker Jake Hummel to a one-year contract, according to multiple reports on March 13, 2025. This roster change comes on the heels of the departures of key special teams contributors Malik Harrison and Chris Board, who signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers and New York Giants, respectively.

Hummel, 26, has made a name for himself as a special teams standout, recording eight special teams tackles and blocking a punt last season that resulted in a touchdown while playing for the Los Angeles Rams. “It’s a brand new opportunity, and I’m excited to contribute wherever I can,” Hummel said in a statement.

The Iowa State graduate was undrafted in 2022 but quickly made the Rams’ 53-man roster, where he showcased his versatility and dedication. Over the past two seasons, he participated in 77% and 80% of the Rams’ special teams snaps, respectively, solidifying his role as a crucial member of the unit.

With the Ravens losing two of their top special teams players, Hummel’s addition is seen as a strategic move to fill the gap. In addition to his special teams prowess, Hummel brings linebacker depth behind starters Roquan Smith and Trenton Simpson. He logged 74 defensive snaps last season and concluded his year with a personal-best 17 tackles.

The Ravens also formally announced the release of veteran safety Marcus Williams, who lost his starting position during the previous season and did not play after Week 12. Williams, 28, joined the Ravens as a free agent in 2022 after five seasons with the New Orleans Saints. In his three years with Baltimore, he amassed 136 tackles, 18 passes defended, and five interceptions.

Williams commented on his release, saying, “I appreciate the Ravens organization for the opportunity over the last three years and look forward to what comes next.” Throughout his career, Williams has totaled 20 interceptions, 456 tackles, and 56 passes defended, making him a notable figure in the Ravens’ defensive lineup.

As free agency unfolds, the Ravens appear poised to make additional moves to strengthen their roster. Hummel’s signing represents a significant step as the team looks to maintain competitive special teams performance in the upcoming season.
