Ravichandran Ashwin Reaches 500 Test Wickets: A Record-Breaking Achievement
Indian cricket star Ravichandran Ashwin created history on the second day of the gripping third Test match against England as he reached the remarkable milestone of 500 Test wickets.
Ashwin, a seasoned off-spinner, had ended the previous Test in Vizag with 499 wickets, setting the stage for his 500th scalp which came with the dismissal of Zak Crawley.
Joining the elite 500-wicket club, Ashwin becomes the ninth bowler in Test history to achieve this feat, following legends like Muttiah Muralitharan, Shane Warne, Anil Kumble, and Nathan Lyon.
Notably, the milestone puts Ashwin in a prestigious position as the only Indian bowler since Anil Kumble to surpass the 500-wicket mark in Test cricket.
With a significant portion of his wickets, 347 to be exact, coming on home soil, Ashwin has been a formidable force as India‘s key bowler in Test matches played in the country.
Ashwin’s remarkable journey to 500 Test wickets came to fruition in his 98th Test match, making him the second-fastest bowler in history to achieve this milestone after the unparalleled Muttiah Muralitharan.
Teammate Ravindra Jadeja had playfully predicted that Ashwin would achieve the feat in Rajkot, Jadeja’s hometown, a prophecy that indeed came true with Ashwin’s remarkable performance.
Throughout his Test career, Ashwin has accumulated 34 five-wicket hauls and eight 10-wicket match hauls, showcasing his consistency and impact on the game.
Currently standing at 500 Test wickets, Ashwin joins the ranks of active bowlers like James Anderson and Nathan Lyon, who have also surpassed the 400-wicket mark in Test cricket.
