Real ID Deadline Approaching: What You Need to Know

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — With the deadline for securing a Real ID fast approaching, residents across the United States, including those in North Carolina and Illinois, are being urged to take action to ensure compliance. Starting May 7, 2025, only state-issued driver’s licenses and identification cards that meet the standards established by the REAL ID Act will be accepted for official use, including boarding commercial flights.

The REAL ID Act, enacted in response to the 9/11 terrorist attacks, requires stricter proof of identity for driver’s licenses and ID cards. To help citizens transition to this new requirement, various state officials are providing guidance and raising awareness about the upcoming changes.

In North Carolina, the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) emphasizes checking for the gold or black star in the upper right corner of the ID, which indicates it is a Real ID. State residents seeking to obtain their Real IDs must apply in person at a DMV office, as the IDs cannot be ordered online. The required documents include proof of identity/date of birth, Social Security number, and proof of residency, which may consist of a valid U.S. passport or certified birth certificate.

Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias has been promoting the “Get Real Illinois” campaign to educate residents on Real ID requirements. At a recent news conference, he reiterated that despite the need for a Real ID for air travel and certain federal site access, it is not mandatory for daily activities like driving or voting. “You do not need a Real ID to drive a vehicle,” he stated.

Furthermore, Giannoulias cautioned about potential high demand as the deadline nears, urging residents to plan their visits to DMV offices ahead of time to avoid long waits. He also acknowledged public skepticism surrounding the deadline’s reliability due to previous postponements but clarified, “The TSA has published a ‘final rule’ that eliminates the option for further extensions.”

Both states have confirmed that those without a Real ID can still travel domestically using a valid passport. However, for individuals requiring access to federal facilities or commercial air travel, securing a Real ID will be essential. Additionally, residents may explore alternative forms of identification if they do not wish to obtain a Real ID.

As the May 2025 deadline draws closer, residents in North Carolina and Illinois are encouraged to gather necessary documents early and consult their respective state’s DMV websites for additional resources and guidance. Ensuring compliance with the Real ID requirements will help facilitate smoother travel and access to federally regulated facilities.
