MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — Rep. Brandon Gill has ramped up his campaign to deport Rep. Ilhan Omar, urging supporters to sign a petition that seeks her removal from the United States. The petition, which was circulated through a recent fundraising email, includes inflammatory language suggesting that Omar, a Somali American lawmaker, should never have been allowed into the country.
The email states, “we should have never let” Omar into the U.S., and calls for her return to Somalia, where she was born. It further accuses Omar of contributing to what the email describes as a “full-scale invasion” and implies that her actions amount to treason.
This escalation follows a prior statement from Gill posted on social media, where he claimed that America would be better off if Omar were deported. His comments coincided with a video that alleges Omar was hosting workshops for Somali immigrants, advising them on how to avoid detection by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
Omar responded strongly to Gill’s accusations, labeling them as racist and fascist. In her statement, she described it as “truly disgusting that members of the Republican party feel emboldened to engage in racist and quite frankly fascist remarks.”
She further criticized Gill’s approach as a means of gaining publicity, stating, “Representative Gill’s attempt to clout chase by threatening to deport a legal US citizen because you disagree with them is directly out of Donald Trump‘s fascist playbook.”
Omar, who arrived in the U.S. as a refugee during the Somali civil war in 1995 and became a citizen five years later, emphasized her commitment to remaining in the country. “My advice, do your homework and stop believing every dumb racist rumor that you hear. I am not going anywhere you 🤡,” she added in response to the controversy.
The conflict highlights the ongoing division in U.S. politics, especially regarding immigration and the treatment of minority lawmakers. Omar’s supporters argue that Gill’s statements reflect a broader pattern of hostility faced by immigrants and people of color in the political arena.
