SEATTLE, Wash. — Former NFL player Richard Sherman shared insights on leadership in a recent article for The Athletic, reflecting on his 11-year career and the best leaders he encountered, particularly highlighting his time with the Seattle Seahawks.

According to Sherman, consistency is paramount in leadership. “It’s hard to see someone as a leader if you can’t depend on them,” he wrote. He praised his former teammates, naming Bobby Wagner, Marshawn Lynch, Kam Chancellor, and Fred Warner as standout leaders.

Wagner, who joined the Seahawks in 2012, earned respect from veterans by keeping a cool demeanor despite playful jabs from teammates. Sherman recalls, “Bobby just took all the jokes and called the plays. He always had a great way of commanding the room and the huddle.” Over time, Wagner’s approach garnered admiration from teammates.

Marshawn Lynch’s leadership style is described as unique. Sherman noted Lynch was a peacekeeper in the locker room, ready to provide support during tough times. “If you ever needed Marshawn, you could call him at 1 o’clock in the morning to come pick you up,” Sherman said. He admired Lynch’s selflessness, recalling how Lynch sometimes faked injuries to allow younger players time on the field.

Kam Chancellor, a key defensive player known for his hard-hitting style, impressed Sherman with his commitment to the team. Sherman quoted Dumbledore from Harry Potter to illustrate Chancellor’s unexpected leadership, saying, “Perhaps those who are best suited to power are those who have never sought it.” Chancellor often took responsibility for the team’s mistakes, pushing teammates to elevate their game.

Fred Warner, a younger player who transitioned to middle linebacker, gained Sherman’s respect through hard work and dedication. Sherman recalled their conversations about tackling various challenges: “Man, that was my plan coming in. I don’t know if I’m ever going to play linebacker… I’m going to put my all into whatever they ask me to do every single day, every single play.”

Through dedication and a focus on preparation, Warner transformed himself into one of the league’s best leaders, respected by teammates for his approach.
