Rio Ferdinand Questions Florian Wirtz’s Decision to Join Liverpool

London, England – Former England international Rio Ferdinand expressed concerns about Florian Wirtz‘s recent performance with Liverpool. He believes the young midfielder may be having second thoughts about his summer transfer from Bayer 04 Leverkusen.
Wirtz, who was one of Liverpool’s six new signings this summer for a reported €100 million, has struggled to make an impact. After coming off a strong career in Germany, he has failed to secure a starting position. Under manager Arne Slot, Liverpool has lost four consecutive matches, adding to the pressure on Wirtz.
Ferdinand shared his thoughts on his YouTube channel, stating, “This is a huge decision – you’re a €100 million player. I was a record transfer, and if a coach had left me out in the first two or three months of important games, I would have had serious doubts.” He emphasized that it’s normal for players to question their decisions during tough times.
Wirtz sat on the bench during crucial fixtures against Chelsea and Manchester United, which has led Ferdinand to speculate on the player’s mental state. “I bet when he didn’t see his name on the team sheet, he thought, ‘Was this the right choice?’” the former defender suggested.
With just one goal involvement in his eleven appearances, Wirtz’s situation at Liverpool is concerning. Experts and fans alike are starting to question whether the transfer was the right choice for him. Ferdinand pointed out that even confident players face doubts after a rocky start.
“I know players who had big transfers and then felt, ‘Oh my God, was this right?’ – and these are confident guys,” Ferdinand said. He noted, “Doubts arise; you can’t avoid them. You ask yourself: ‘Did I make the right decision?’”
As Wirtz continues to adapt to the Premier League, Liverpool’s overall struggles heighten the scrutiny on the young star.
