Rockets Lose to Thunder in Double Overtime Season Opener
HOUSTON, Texas — The Houston Rockets kicked off the 2025-26 NBA season with a thrilling double overtime loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder. The final score highlighted significant concerns for the Rockets, particularly their double-big lineup, which struggled to make an impact.
In the loss, Rockets center Alperen Sengun proved to be an offensive powerhouse, scoring 39 points, grabbing 11 rebounds, and dishing out seven assists. However, the effectiveness of the double-big lineup was hindered by Steven Adams, who managed only four points in 37 minutes on the court.
Adams faced fatigue issues during the game, particularly evident in a 7.5-minute stretch of the third quarter where he failed to protect the rim effectively. The Rockets’ strategy to implement a double-big lineup relies on playing zone defense, which requires quick movement and rotation. Adams’ inability to keep pace raises alarms about the lineup’s viability.
This situation raises potential concerns for the Portland Trail Blazers, who have recently invested consecutive first-round draft picks in the center position. Yang Hansen, one of those picks, draws scrutiny regarding his mobility and ability to translate his skills into the NBA. Sam Vecenie, a draft expert from The Athletic, expressed doubt about Hansen’s ability to adapt due to his physical attributes.
“Yang has several intriguing skills… I worry that it’s going to be hard for Yang to actualize those things in the NBA because of his high-hipped frame, lack of explosiveness and lack of lateral ability,” Vecenie said.
Despite these concerns, some argue that Hansen has demonstrated readiness for an immediate role, showing potential during summer league, training camp, and preseason. However, with fellow center Donovan Clingan seeking significant playing time, it remains uncertain how their roles can coexist without stifling Hansen’s development.
While the Rockets and Blazers’ center duos aren’t directly comparable, both teams face similar challenges due to their respective players’ lack of mobility. In a league that emphasizes perimeter play, this could prove detrimental to their success.
As the Rockets face scrutiny following their loss, similar concerns loom for the Trail Blazers ahead of Hansen’s NBA debut.
