Rory McCann to Replace Ray Stevenson as Baylan Skoll in Ahsoka Season 2
Rory McCann, best known for his role as Sandor ‘The Hound‘ Clegane in Game of Thrones, is reportedly set to take over the role of Baylan Skoll in the upcoming second season of Disney+’s Ahsoka. The character was originally portrayed by the late Ray Stevenson, who passed away in 2023 at the age of 58. According to insider Jeff Sneider, McCann’s casting comes with the blessing of Stevenson’s widow, ensuring the continuation of Baylan Skoll’s story.
Baylan Skoll, a Dark Jedi mercenary, played a pivotal role in the first season of Ahsoka, aiding in the return of Grand Admiral Thrawn to the known galaxy. Stevenson’s portrayal of the character was widely praised, and his untimely death left fans wondering how the show would address his absence. Series creator Dave Filoni had previously hinted that the character’s story would continue, emphasizing the need for a thoughtful approach to recasting.
McCann, a Scottish actor, brings a wealth of experience to the role, having appeared in films like Gladiator II, XXX: Return of Xander Cage, and Jumanji: The Next Level. His television credits include The Book Group, Banished, and the animated series Transformers: EarthSpark. McCann’s friendship with Stevenson adds a poignant layer to the casting, as he steps into a role that holds significant emotional weight for both the cast and fans.
Diana Lee Inosanto, who plays Morgan Elsbeth in Ahsoka, shared her admiration for Stevenson, calling him ‘poetry in motion’ on set. ‘Ray really was so excited for this character to be released into the world,’ she said. ‘He was just an extraordinarily kind human being.’ Filoni also expressed regret that Stevenson did not live to see the acclaim for the series, stating, ‘I think he would’ve been over the moon.’
The second season of Ahsoka is expected to explore Baylan Skoll’s mysterious quest on the extragalactic world of Peridea, where he seeks a power he believes can change the galaxy. While McCann’s casting has not been officially confirmed by Lucasfilm, the report suggests that the decision has been made, paving the way for the next chapter in the Star Wars saga.
