Running Influencer Matt Choi Disqualified From New York City Marathon Over Illegal Ebike Assistance
Matt Choi, a 29-year-old running influencer from Austin, Texas, has been at the center of controversy following his participation in the New York City Marathon on Sunday. Choi finished the marathon with a time of 2:57:15, but his achievement was marred by allegations that he received illegal assistance from someone riding an electric bike (ebike) alongside him during the race.
The use of ebikes for support is strictly prohibited by the New York Road Runners (NYRR), the organizers of the marathon, due to safety concerns and the disruption it causes to other runners. This incident is not the first time Choi has been accused of such behavior; similar complaints were raised after the Austin Marathon and the NYRR Brooklyn Half in May 2023.
Several runners reported that the ebike, allegedly ridden by Choi’s brother, blocked their path to water stations and even collided with some participants. The incident has sparked widespread criticism on social media and running forums, with many expressing frustration not only with Choi but also with the NYRR for not enforcing their rules effectively.
In response to the allegations, the NYRR has disqualified Matt Choi from the New York City Marathon. The organization is also reviewing the matter further, with a meeting scheduled to assess potential violations and determine appropriate actions.
The controversy has highlighted broader issues within the running community, including the behavior of influencers and the need for stricter enforcement of race rules to ensure safety and fairness for all participants).
