Russell Westbrook Returns to Denver in Sacramento’s 130-124 Win
DENVER, Colorado — Russell Westbrook returned to Ball Arena on Monday night as a member of the Sacramento Kings, scoring 26 points in a 130-124 victory over the Denver Nuggets.
Westbrook, 37, who previously played for the Nuggets, emphasized the split was not his choice. “The truth is that they didn’t want me back,” he told reporters after the game. “Ain’t up to me. God always has a plan. Be patient.”
In his introductory game back in Denver, he managed 12 rebounds and six assists but also turned the ball over six times. His playing style, a blend of chaos and improvisation, contrasted sharply with Denver’s need for structure, leading to what he called a complicated relationship with the team.
“They told me not to sign the player option,” Westbrook said. “I don’t go anywhere I’m not wanted. I don’t need to.” Westbrook’s averages with Denver included 13.3 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 6.1 assists over the previous season.
Fans of the Nuggets gave Westbrook a warm tribute before the game, presenting a video on the jumbotron, which prompted a standing ovation at Ball Arena. “He deserved it,” said Julie Craig, a Nuggets fan, who wore a Westbrook jersey. “He’s scrappy… it’s not his fault we did not get that championship.”
Despite his struggles with the Nuggets, Westbrook is now poised to play a crucial role with Sacramento. Kings rookie Nique Clifford expressed enthusiasm about learning from Westbrook, stating, “I feel like I can learn so much from him.”
During the game, the Nuggets managed to maintain a lead thanks to strong performances from their bench, with players like Bruce Brown contributing significantly. Coach David Adelman noted the importance of their bench depth in achieving the win.
As the Nuggets continue to adapt and strengthen their roster following an organizational overhaul, Westbrook’s departure allows him to seek a team more suited to his style. Westbrook remains a fan favorite and will look to make an impact with the Kings moving forward.
