Sammi Kinghorn Celebrates Victory At Paralympics

On a thrilling day at the Paralympic Games, Sammi Kinghorn is set to compete in the T53 400m event, following her stunning victory in the T53 100m race. This marked her first Paralympic gold medal, making her the first non-Chinese athlete to win this event since Tanni Grey-Thompson in 2004.

Kinghorn, who previously claimed silver medals in the T54 1500m and 800m, expressed her disbelief and joy at achieving this milestone. She has now accumulated five Paralympic medals, building on her successes from previous Games in Tokyo.

In addition to Kinghorn, Tokyo champion Dan Pembroke will be defending his title in the men’s J13 javelin event. Veteran athlete Dan Greaves will also compete in the men’s F64 discus alongside newcomer Harrison Walsh.

Further competition will see Funmi Oduwaiye and Anna Nicholson participating in the shot put, while Nathan Maguire and Daniel Sidbury face off in the men’s T54 800m. Melanie Woods aims to secure a podium spot in the T54 400m, and Olivia Breen and Maddie Down prepare for the T38 long jump.

Alice Tai, who has openly shared her mental health struggles, is looking to add another medal to her collection in the S8 500m freestyle final. Tai has already achieved a gold medal in the S8 100m backstroke at the ongoing Games.

Gold-medalist Faye Rogers will compete in the S10 400m freestyle, while thirteen-year-old Iona Winnifrith will participate in the women’s 100m breaststroke in the SB7 classification. Rebecca Redfern is also aiming for gold in the SB13 women’s 100m breaststroke.

Tokyo gold medalist Olivia Broome gets the opportunity to defend her title in the women’s powerlifting -50kg category. Paralympic debuts will come from Charlotte McGuinness and Mark Swann in the -55kg and -65kg categories, respectively.

Attention will also be on Matt Skelhon, who is competing in the R6 – mixed 50m rifle prone event as part of his fifth Paralympic Games.

In a remarkable display, the British wheelchair fencer Coutya became the Paralympic foil champion while Kinghorn set a new Paralympic record in her 100m event. Dame Sarah Storey also added to her remarkable achievements with victory in the women’s C5 time trial, securing her 18th Paralympic gold medal.
