San Jose, California — The San Jose Sharks announced today that they have placed defenseman Marc-Edouard Vlasic on waivers for the purpose of contract buyout. This move signals the end of Vlasic’s 19-year tenure with the team.

General Manager Mike Grier expressed his mixed feelings about the decision. “This was a difficult decision to make today, with how much Marc has meant to the San Jose organization for 19 years,” he said. “I was fortunate enough to be here with Marc for his first season with the Sharks and knew he would become a great defenseman.”

Vlasic, 38, was originally drafted by the Sharks in the second round of the 2005 NHL Draft. Over the course of his career, he became known as one of the premier shutdown defensemen in the league, often tasked with guarding the best players on the ice. He played 1,323 games for San Jose, ranking second in franchise history behind Patrick Marleau.

Throughout his career, Vlasic scored 84 goals and registered 295 assists, totaling 379 points. Despite a challenging season last year when he only played 27 games due to injury, his impact on the team’s defensive strategy was significant. Grier highlighted Vlasic’s unparalleled expertise and experience within the organization, noting that he represented Canada internationally multiple times.

“He will go down not only as one of the best defensemen in franchise history, but one of the best players,” Grier added. The buyout will save the Sharks approximately $2.3 million in cap space for the 2025-26 season. However, they will incur a cost of around $1.16 million against the cap for 2026-27.

The Sharks have expressed gratitude for Vlasic’s long service and commitment to the franchise, with Grier stating, “We want to thank him for his dedication and commitment to the organization, and wish him all the best.”
