Scheffler Leads CJ Cup Byron Nelson with Stellar Opening Round

McKinney, Texas — World number one Scottie Scheffler began the CJ Cup Byron Nelson with a blistering 10-under 61 on Thursday, establishing a two-shot lead. Scheffler, who received the tournament invite just 18 hours before his tee time, showcased his skills at TPC Craig Ranch.
Scheffler made the turn in a stunning 29, featuring four consecutive birdies from the third hole and an eagle on the par-5 ninth. He finished off the round with three additional birdies, leaving him atop the leaderboard ahead of Rico Hoey and Jhonattan Vegas, both at 8-under.
The defending champion, Jordan Spieth, managed a 67. Players this week can lift, clean, and replace their balls in the fairways due to heavy rain that affected the course on Wednesday.
Scheffler, a Texas native, expressed his excitement about returning to the event after missing last year’s tournament for the birth of his first child. He emphasized the significance of this tournament in his career, stating, “Jordan and I love playing here. This tournament has meant a lot to us over the years.” His previous wins include nine titles last season, including the Masters and two Players Championships.
Hoey, who is also seeking his first PGA Tour victory, had a strong finish with an 8-under 63, matching his career low on tour. Cameron Champ, another late-entry player who replaced Gary Woodland, finished at 7-under after battling through early bogeys.
Seamus Power from Ireland made headlines as well, scoring an eagle on the par-5 fifth and closing with two birdies to end the day at 3-under.
Scheffler reflected on his performance, sharing, “I played nice today. I hit some good shots to start the round and was able to capitalize on my opportunities. There are three more days of the tournament, and I’m just focused on getting some rest and preparing for tomorrow.” As Scheffler aims to secure his first victory of 2025, he will look to build on his impressive opening round.
