Scotty Bowman Watches Stanley Cup Final, Supports Son Stan’s Oilers

EDMONTON, Canada — Scotty Bowman, a 91-year-old hockey legend, has returned to the Stanley Cup Final, but this time is different. He came to support his son, Stan Bowman, the general manager of the Edmonton Oilers, for Game 1 against the Florida Panthers on June 4, 2025.
Bowman, who has won the Cup 14 times, including nine as a coach, made a special trip from Buffalo to be present for the crucial game at Rogers Place. “He wanted me to watch one game,” Scotty said, emphasizing how travel has become difficult for him at his age.
Stan, sharing his excitement, said, “It’s really been a pleasure for me to have him here, just as a fan essentially. He’s the ultimate hockey fan.” The Bowmans hold 17 total Stanley Cup titles between them, highlighting their hockey legacy.
Scotty’s first Cup win came with the Montreal Canadiens in 1973, the same year he and his wife decided to name their future son Stanley. Stan Bowman was born a month later and grew up immersed in hockey culture, learning from his father.
Although Stan took a different career path initially, his passion for hockey eventually led him back. He became the general manager of the Chicago Blackhawks and collaborated with his father during their Championship wins from 2010 to 2015.
In 2022, Stan resigned amid turmoil but returned to the NHL in July 2024 when he was hired by the Oilers. Now, Scotty observes from the stands, sharing his insights with Stan in a way that blends fatherly support with his deep knowledge of the game.
On the eve of the game, Scotty engaged with reporters, offering sharp observations about the rematch against the Panthers. His insights on the players’ health, depth, and goaltending provided valuable context.
As the game proceeded, Stan reflected on how his father’s vast experience and dedication to the sport influence their discussions. “It’s just a conversation, and then you reflect on what you talked about,” he noted, giggling as he mentioned how Scotty still faithfully watches hockey every night.
The Bowmans’ connection to the sport, their shared experiences, and their remarkable achievements enrich their journey in this Stanley Cup Final, underscoring a legacy that intertwines personal and professional triumphs.
