Seattle Kraken Appoint Jordan Eberle as New Captain
In a noteworthy development within the National Hockey League (NHL), the Seattle Kraken have appointed veteran right wing Jordan Eberle as the team captain. The announcement came during pregame introductions at Climate Pledge Arena prior to the Kraken’s season opener against the St. Louis Blues. This decision fills the captaincy vacancy left by the 2022 trade of Mark Giordano to the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Seattle Kraken General Manager Ron Francis and Head Coach Dan Bylsma were instrumental in this decision. “Leadership to me is often a misunderstood word,” said Bylsma. “Every person, in every situation, has a chance. You are a leader in how you act, the time you show up, how you train, how you eat, how we come to the rink, how we play.”
Eberle, 34, who is entering his 15th season in the NHL, was chosen not only for his on-ice performance but also for his significant off-ice contributions. Eberle expressed his appreciation for the fan support and their role in motivating the team. “They’re the people that are cheering and the people that are loud in the stands – the ones that kind of will us to win hockey games,” he remarked.
His leadership has been evident since his early days with the Kraken, where he has been serving as one of the team’s alternate captains. Known for scoring pivotal goals, Eberle notched the first hat trick in franchise history and a memorable playoff overtime winner against Colorado, leading the Kraken to a series victory.
Eberle’s influence extends beyond the rink. During his time with the Kraken, he led cultural moments, such as selecting the team’s dressing room victory anthem and participating actively in community events. Last season, he persevered through injuries, scoring an overtime winner against Detroit despite a hand fracture.
In March, Eberle further cemented his commitment to the team by signing a two-year, $9.5 million contract extension. His appointment as captain was officially communicated to him by Francis and Bylsma just days before it was publicly announced. “I have nothing but good things to say about Seattle, the city and the fans,” Eberle stated.
With Eberle now leading the team, the Kraken aim to capitalize on his experienced leadership both on and off the ice, as they strive to assert themselves in the NHL.
