Seattle Seahawks Rely on Geno Smith’s Strong Performance Despite Struggles
The Seattle Seahawks are navigating a season filled with ups and downs, marked by their fluctuating performance over five games. Despite this, quarterback Geno Smith has emerged as a critical player, leading the league in passing attempts, completions, and yards.
With a record of 3-2, the team started strong but has faced challenges in recent games. The defense has shown both brilliance and vulnerability, and while the running game led by Kenneth Walker III had moments of explosiveness, it has not been consistent. This inconsistency is juxtaposed with Smith’s relatively stable passing game.
Geno Smith, currently topping the league charts with 199 passing attempts, 143 completions, and 1,466 yards, has become a pillar for the Seahawks. His passing accuracy stands at 71.9 percent, placing him fourth in this metric behind quarterbacks Jayden Daniels, Joe Burrow, and Baker Mayfield. Head Coach Mike Macdonald praised Smith’s efforts, referring to him as a ‘galvanizing force’ and acknowledging his competitive spirit.
“Geno is a big bright spot on our football team right now,” said Macdonald via the team’s website. “We’re five games in, we’ve got a long way to go. But, the good news is we’ve got another game here to make it right and have Geno take the next step in his game.”
The Seahawks’ offensive strategy has largely relied on the passing game, ranking seventh in total offense and 11th in scoring. This approach is a necessity, given the team’s fewest rushing attempts in the league.
Offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb noted the need for a more balanced attack that includes utilizing running back Kenneth Walker more effectively. However, he expressed confidence in Smith’s ability to make sound decisions. “I have a ton of confidence in Geno to make all of those decisions and throws and be responsible,” Grubb stated.
Smith himself has shown adaptability, focusing on making the most of his opportunities. “I’m not out there sitting there counting all the reps, I’m trying to make the reps count,” said Smith. At nearly 34 years old, he is also set to surpass his personal best in rushing yards.
As the Seahawks look towards their game against the San Francisco 49ers, scheduled for Thursday, October 10, the team hopes to establish a more consistent rushing attack to ease the burden on Smith and strike a balance in their offensive playstyle.
Grubb highlighted Smith’s leadership qualities, saying, “He’s tough as nails, man. He’s a total warrior.” The Seahawks are counting on Smith’s veteran presence to guide them through the season’s challenges, particularly in high-pressure situations demanding a strong passing game.
