Secrets We Keep: Who’s Responsible for the Missing Au Pair?

COPENHAGEN, Denmark — The disappearance of a young Filipino au pair, Ruby Tan, from a wealthy suburb north of Copenhagen has set off alarm bells in her upscale community. Cecilie, a resident and Ruby’s neighbor, grows increasingly worried when she realizes Ruby is missing. Seeking answers, Cecilie teams up with her own au pair, Angel, to investigate.
In the six-episode Netflix series “Secrets We Keep,” Cecilie’s life is shaken as rumor and suspicion seep into her life. The series dives into themes of privilege and neglect, shining a light on issues surrounding the treatment of foreign workers in affluent societies.
Ruby had shared her distress with Cecilie about living with the Hoffmanns, her employers, right before she disappeared. When her friend Katarina, a Hoffmann, reports Ruby missing the next morning, Cecilie fears something sinister has happened.
As suspicions mount, Cecilie discovers a pregnancy test near the area where Ruby was last seen. This revelation leads her to contemplate the involvement of Katarina’s husband, Rasmus, who has a questionable past and is implicated when Ruby’s abandoned belongings are discovered.
Local police investigator Aicha Petersen enters the fray, but she faces hurdles in prioritizing Ruby’s case due to the complexities of social class. The investigation intensifies when Ruby’s body is located at a marina, raising more questions than answers.
In later episodes, the narrative reveals deeper issues, including young Oscar Hoffmann’s disturbing behavior and his potential involvement with Ruby. The series culminates in a shocking twist, revealing Oscar as the father of Ruby’s child, which adds layers to the existing tension between family connections and accountability.
Ultimately, the characters are left grappling with moral dilemmas and the stark inequities of their social world. As Cecilie fights for justice in a community reluctant to confront the truth, viewers are left questioning who holds responsibility in the tragic events surrounding Ruby’s disappearance.
