Sergino Dest Rules Out Barcelona Return Under Xavi’s Management
USMNT star Sergino Dest has ruled out a return to Barcelona while Xavi remains as manager. The 23-year-old defender found his game time limited under Xavi last season and joined PSV on loan in the summer. Currently, Dest has been instrumental in PSV’s successful campaign in the Eredivisie, with the team winning all 17 of their matches and holding a 12-point lead at the top of the table.
When asked about his future and the possibility of a permanent move to PSV or a return to Barcelona, Dest told VI, ‘I think Barcelona, PSV, and I have something to say about that. And right now, it’s too early to talk about that. Every player has their goals, and every player wants to play at the top, including me.’
Although Dest expressed a long-term desire to return to the level he came from, he recognizes the importance of relishing his current successful season at PSV. He added, ‘So I have my full focus on PSV at the moment, and at the end of the season, we will look further. Maybe I’ll stay, maybe I’ll go.’
Dest’s decision not to consider a return to Barcelona under Xavi’s management is another blow for the under-fire Spanish coach. ESPN sources indicate that several first-team players have lost confidence in Xavi, who recently suffered a heavy 4-1 defeat against Real Madrid in the Spanish Super Cup final.
Barcelona currently find themselves in fourth place in LaLiga, eight points behind leaders Girona. The financial constraints faced by the club have hampered Xavi’s ability to register new players at the start of the season. While some players are disillusioned with Xavi’s management style, not all hold the same view.
Despite the challenges, Xavi remains in charge of Barcelona, and his team will continue their quest in the Champions League and Copa del Rey. They are set to face Napoli in the last 16 round of the Champions League and will take on third-tier side Unionistas in the Copa del Rey last 16.
