Severe Storm And Tornado Devastate Multiple Areas In Durban

Multiple areas in Durban, South Africa, faced devastation as an intense storm accompanied by a tornado-like event swept through parts of Umhlanga, Seatides, Tongaat, and Ballito. Videos circulating on social media captured the destructive force of the storm system as it moved inland from the sea.

Rescue operations are currently underway, with Response Unit South Africa (Rusa) mobilized to address emergencies, particularly in the severely affected Tongaat area. Roads have been blocked, trees uprooted, and infrastructure damaged, leading to significant challenges for residents and commuters.

The South African Weather Service (Saws) is investigating the exact nature of the storm event and the reported tornado-like phenomenon. Preliminary assessments suggest widespread damage to houses, infrastructure, and schools in several locations.

The eThekwini Municipality’s disaster management teams have been actively responding to the aftermath of the storm since 4:20 pm, providing emergency relief to affected individuals and families. Mayor Mxolisi Kaunda plans to visit the impacted areas on Tuesday to assess the extent of the damage.

Heavy rains have also disrupted water and electricity supplies in uThongathi, leaving communities without essential services. Additionally, reports of tornado-like winds in Northern Natal and the damage inflicted on Oscarberg School in Rorke’s Drift have added to the region’s challenges.

These recent weather events follow devastating flooding in the Eastern Cape over the past weekend, underscoring the immediate need for comprehensive disaster response and community support. Weather warnings remain in effect for eThekwini and the South Coast, urging residents to exercise caution and preparedness.
