Shane Watson Coaching San Francisco Unicorns

San Francisco, CA – Shane Watson has concluded his role as head coach of the San Francisco Unicorns after three seasons. The decision to part ways was mutual as the franchise shifts towards a year-round coaching model.

Watson, who was the inaugural coach for the team starting in 2023, played a pivotal role in establishing the Unicorns in Major League Cricket (MLC). Under his leadership, the team made significant strides, reaching the Championship game in 2024 and making playoff appearances over consecutive years.

During his time, Watson developed a six-game winning streak in 2025, contributing to a strong team culture. His coaching journey began on a rocky note, with the Unicorns finishing fifth in the inaugural season but recovering to become playoff contenders.

Unicorns CEO David White praised Watson’s contributions, stating, “Shane was the natural choice to be our first Head Coach, and he played a key role in building the Unicorns from the ground up. We are eternally grateful for Shane’s dedication across his three seasons in charge.”

Co-owner Anand Rajaraman also expressed gratitude, emphasizing the winning culture Watson helped establish. “Shane has been an incredible leader for the Unicorns, both on and off the field,” he said.

Watson reflected on his tenure, expressing his gratitude for the opportunity. “It has been a true privilege to lead the San Francisco Unicorns over the last three seasons. I’m proud of what we accomplished,” he stated.

The Unicorns revealed that they are transitioning to a full-time coaching model, which Watson cannot commit to due to other professional obligations, including his performance coaching brand, BEON Performance. The franchise has not yet announced a replacement for Watson.

Watson’s impact on the team and MLC has been notable while emphasizing the development of young American talent in the sport. His legacy remains integral to the Unicorns as they look forward to future seasons.
