Sharks’ Warsofsky Sits Mukhamadullin Amid Tough Love for Young Defensemen
San Jose, CA – San Jose Sharks head coach Ryan Warsofsky is making bold moves in the early days of the NHL season. Shakir Mukhamadullin, a promising young defenseman, was scratched for the Sharks following his performance in the season opener against the Vegas Golden Knights. Despite recording two assists, Warsofsky has emphasized that Mukhamadullin’s overall game did not meet expectations.
Warsofsky noted, “I thought he got his legs moving as the game went on.” However, he criticized Mukhamadullin for not starting the game with the necessary urgency, stating, “When he’s skating, he’s very effective.” The coach highlighted the importance of skating and positioning, pointing out that Mukhamadullin struggled with puck battles and making strong plays initially in the game.
The young Russian defenseman, who stands at 6-foot-4, played just 12 minutes and 45 seconds in the opener, the lowest among Sharks defensemen. Warsofsky acknowledged the depth that the Sharks’ defense offers this season, which includes new talent like Lane Dickinson, who will make his NHL debut in place of Mukhamadullin.
As for Dickinson, he’s ready for his moment and joked about his brother missing the debut: “He’s setting up a watch party at home. In our basement. I don’t know if my parents know about that.” Warsofsky’s decision follows a broader effort to maintain accountability and competition within the team, as he aims to integrate new players into the lineup.
Warsofsky made it clear that he doesn’t believe Mukhamadullin performed poorly overall, but “there’s a higher bar for staying in the lineup this season.” He remains optimistic about Mukhamadullin’s future, stating, “He’s gonna be a good player.” While the Sharks prepare to face the Anaheim Ducks on Saturday, the spotlight will be on both Dickinson and Mukhamadullin as they navigate their roles on the team.
In other news, Yaroslav Askarov is set to make his first start of the season, signaling continued shifts in the Sharks’ lineup. Fans are expected to tune in for the game at 7 PM PT at SAP Center, as the Sharks seek to establish their identity this season.
