Da’Shawn Hand Signs with Chargers, Boosts Defensive Line Depth

LOS ANGELES, Calif. — Da’Shawn Hand is joining the Los Angeles Chargers on a one-year contract worth up to $3.35 million, as reported by NFL Media‘s Mike Garafolo. The signing addresses the team’s need for depth on the defensive line following the departure of Poona Ford to the Rams.
Hand, 29, is coming off a solid two-year stint with the Miami Dolphins, where he played all 17 games in the 2024 season, recording 31 tackles, a sack, and several key defensive stats. Over his career, Hand has suited up for the Dolphins, Tennessee Titans, and Detroit Lions, racking up a total of 5.0 career sacks.
Originally a fourth-round pick in the 2018 NFL Draft out of Alabama, Hand has established himself as a versatile player, transitioning from defensive end to tackle. He played in 64 games across his four-year career, showcasing his resilience and adaptability.
“I’m excited about the opportunity in Los Angeles,” Hand said. “I look forward to making an impact and building on last season’s performance.”
The Chargers are looking to bolster their defensive capabilities after finishing last season with the league’s top-ranked defense, allowing an average of 17.7 points per game. Ford’s departure left a notable gap, prompting the need for effective replacements.
Additionally, Hand’s contract comes amid a series of offseason moves by the Chargers, who are actively seeking to enhance their roster ahead of the upcoming season. They have also recently signed fellow Crimson Tide alum Najee Harris to a two-year deal worth $9.25 million.
Chargers’ management hopes that Hand’s addition will facilitate an even stronger unit as they prepare for the challenges ahead. With the NFL draft approaching, additional moves are anticipated to further solidify the roster.
As the Chargers continue their preparations, fans will be eager to see how Hand performs and integrates into the team’s defensive schemes in the coming season.
