Shroud Of Turin Exhibit Chicago Holy Week

CHICAGO, Ill. — St. Simon of Cyrene Parish will open the Shroud of Turin Exhibit during Holy Week, inviting both the faithful and curious individuals to view one of Catholicism’s most revered artifacts. The exhibit, featuring a full-length replica of the Shroud, is set to take place at the St. Martin de Porres worship site from [insert specific dates here].

The Shroud of Turin is a linen cloth believed by many to be the burial shroud of Jesus Christ. For centuries, it has generated fervent devotion and scrutiny, as its authenticity remains a subject of intense debate among scholars and theologians.

This traveling exhibit represents the only Chicago stop for this unique display. It features a life-size reproduction of the Shroud, meticulously developed from a photographic negative captured by the Eastman Kodak Company. Visitors will observe both the front and back of the cloth, making it the focal point of an extensive mobile experience.

In addition to the Shroud replica, attendees will see a striking life-size model of a crucified body, which vividly depicts the wounds of Christ as described in the Gospels. This model parallels the markings found on the Shroud itself, offering a poignant visualization of the events surrounding the Passion.

The exhibit is enriched with 60 detailed informational panels that delve into the Shroud’s historical context, scientific investigations, and its spiritual implications. These findings are a result of over 25 years of rigorous forensic, historical, and theological studies, spearheaded by Monsignor Giulio Ricci and the Center for the Study of the Passion of Christ and the Holy Shroud.

Additionally, this exhibit has been made possible through the generosity of the Conventual Franciscan Friars of Marytown, located at the National Shrine of St. Maximilian Kolbe in Libertyville, Illinois. The friars are presenting this exhibit as a mobile evangelization tool, aiming to reach parishes and communities throughout the United States.

The Shroud itself is preserved in the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist in Turin, Italy, and is seldom exhibited due to its delicate condition. The last public showing occurred in 2015.
