Sinner Advances to ATP Finals Semifinals After Defeating Shelton
TURIN, Italy (AP) — Defending champion Jannik Sinner continued his domination at the ATP Finals, claiming a straight-set victory over Ben Shelton in the penultimate group match. Sinner won 6-3, 7-6 (7-3) on Friday, showcasing his mental strength and securing a spot in the knockout stages without dropping a set or losing a service game.
The 24-year-old Italian had already secured the top position in the Bjorn Borg Group after winning his first two matches. Following this victory, Sinner remains undefeated, having overcome cramp-related issues during his third-round match at October’s Shanghai Masters.
“Against Ben, it’s always a tough challenge,” Sinner said. “You have to take the little chances you have. When he gets up with that huge serve, you can’t do a lot. The mental aspect was great.”
Despite being eliminated from contention, Shelton displayed an aggressive style in the first set, utilizing his athleticism to push through Sinner’s defenses. However, Sinner’s efficiency was key, converting two of his three break-point opportunities.
Shelton’s attempts to maintain pressure were evident as he rushed the net, winning five of eight points on Sinner’s second serve. Yet, Sinner demonstrated a high level of performance, saving all break points he faced. He excelled on service games, dropping just seven points while serving in the second set.
In the tie-break, Sinner maintained composure, pulling ahead 4-1 and closing the match with a small smile on his face after sealing the win on his second match point. Looking ahead, Sinner is set to face Australia’s Alex de Minaur in the semifinals.
Sinner’s journey at the ATP Finals has been remarkable, as he hasn’t dropped a set in the tournament since being defeated by Novak Djokovic in the finals two years ago. With this victory, he further cements his status as a formidable contender.
