Philadelphia 76ers Season Opener Boston Celtics

Boston, MA — The Philadelphia 76ers kicked off the 2025-26 NBA season with an exciting 117-116 victory over the Boston Celtics on Wednesday night, fueled by standout performances from Tyrese Maxey and VJ Edgecombe.

Maxey shone with 40 points and six assists, contributing greatly to the Sixers’ success. Meanwhile, rookie guard Edgecombe, in his NBA debut, scored 34 points, setting a franchise record for points in a debut, previously held by Allen Iverson.

Despite missing players like Paul George, Jared McCain, and Trendon Watford due to injuries, the Sixers managed to secure the win. Edgecombe adjusted quickly to the pace of the NBA, showcasing his skills early by helping the Sixers establish a rhythm.

Edgecombe hit three three-pointers in the first quarter and had a highlight dunk over Xavier Tillman, illustrating his transition from college to the professional level. Maxey’s scoring run in the second quarter helped put the Sixers ahead, combining effectively with Edgecombe during fast breaks.

Despite Joel Embiid’s struggles, who scored only four points on 1-for-9 shooting, the team’s depth shone through. Embiid, on a minutes restriction following surgery, played only 20 minutes but is expected to regain his full capabilities in coming games.

As the game progressed, the Celtics surged ahead with a 16-0 run in the third quarter, but the Sixers fought back. Maxey and Edgecombe’s scoring in the final stretch sealed the victory, with Oubre’s crucial three-pointer pushing the Sixers ahead with less than two minutes remaining.

The Sixers will face the Charlotte Hornets in their home opener on Saturday night as they look to build on this dramatic win.
