Sixers Trade KJ Martin to Mavericks in Surprise NBA Deal
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. — The Philadelphia 76ers have traded forward KJ Martin to the Dallas Mavericks in exchange for guard Quentin Grimes and a 2025 second-round draft pick, the teams announced Tuesday. The deal comes as Martin, 29, was ruled out of Tuesday’s game against the Mavericks due to the pending trade.
Martin, who is averaging 9.1 points and 4.4 rebounds this season, was in the first year of a four-year, $35 million contract with a player option for 2027-28. Known for his versatility and playoff experience, Martin shot 40.1% from 3-point range during the 76ers’ run to the 2023 NBA Finals.
Grimes, 24, joins the Sixers after averaging 10.2 points and 3.8 rebounds per game this season while shooting a career-high 39.8% from beyond the arc. The Mavericks acquired Grimes in a summer trade, but contract extension talks stalled earlier this season. Sources indicate Grimes sought a deal starting at $12.8 million annually, while Dallas offered terms closer to a three-year, $27 million contract.
“This trade gives us flexibility and adds depth to our roster,” a Sixers spokesperson said. “We’re excited to welcome Quentin and see how he fits into our system.”
The Mavericks, meanwhile, gain a proven playoff performer in Martin as they aim to bolster their frontcourt. “KJ brings experience and energy that will complement our core,” a Mavericks representative stated.
The trade marks the latest move in a busy NBA season, with both teams positioning themselves for playoff contention. The Sixers will retain their 2025 second-round pick as part of the deal, adding future assets to their rebuild.
