South Alabama Coach Kane Wommack Set To Join Alabama As Defensive Coordinator

South Alabama football coach Kane Wommack is expected to make the move to the University of Alabama as their new defensive coordinator, according to reports. Wommack has enjoyed success with the Jaguars, winning 17 games over the past two seasons, making him a valuable addition for new Crimson Tide head coach Kalen DeBoer‘s staff.

South Alabama has confirmed Wommack’s resignation from his position, further confirming the likelihood of this move. The Jaguars’ Athletic Director, Joel Erdmann, expressed his gratitude for Wommack’s contributions to the program and wished him and his wife Melissa all the best in their future endeavors.

Wommack is no stranger to working with DeBoer, as the two were previously on the same staff at Indiana University in 2019. Wommack served as the defensive coordinator, while DeBoer worked as the offensive coordinator. Their collaboration helped Indiana achieve its best full regular season in eight years, with eight wins and a Gator Bowl appearance.

Following DeBoer’s departure to Fresno State, Wommack remained at Indiana as the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach. He played a crucial role in guiding the Hoosiers to a successful 6-2 season in 2020, finishing in the top 15 of the AP Top 25 poll. Under Wommack’s leadership, Indiana boasted the Big Ten‘s fourth-best scoring defense, allowing only 20.3 points per game.

Wommack took over as the head coach at South Alabama in 2020 and quickly made an impact. In 2021, he led the Jaguars to their first 10-win season since joining the FBS. The team finished with a 10-3 record and secured a spot in the New Orleans Bowl. This past season, South Alabama closed out with a dominant 59-10 victory over Auburn in the 68 Ventures Bowl.

With his experience as a former player at Ole Miss and Arkansas State, Wommack understands the intricacies of the game. He also brings SEC coaching experience from his time as a graduate assistant at Ole Miss under Hugh Freeze. Wommack then went on to serve as the defensive coordinator at Eastern Illinois and South Alabama before his successful stint at Indiana.
